Welcome to the Frontpage
World record attempt date set

Many of you will know that Daring was built to the size she is for a reason. That was to set a new Guinness World Record attempt for the furthest distance travelled in 24hrs by radio controlled model ship. Well the date and place are now set. The dates are starting on the Saturday 21st of July and finishing on Sunday 22nd of July. The location is our home clubs water at Mote Park in Maidstone the home of the Cygnets Model Boat Club. Even better the Sunday is the clubs annual open day Boats on the Mote. Your all welcome to come along and support us.

New Project

I must firstly thank Husqvarna for donating two engine for this new project. Over the coming months we will be putting the build on the website. For now what we are going to do with this new boat we are keeping to ourselves.
All will become clear soon.
So for now all i can say is a very big thankyou to Husqvarna for there generous support and kind donation.

Welcome

Welcome to the A Team Boatyard website for our model of the Type 45 destroyer HMS DARING. This is by no means an ordinary model, it is being built to a scale of 1/32nd. For a full size vessel of 152.4 meters in length that works out at a model of 4.8 meters or for people like me that prefer old money 15 feet 9 inches. You don't have to be mad to work on this boat but it helps.

We had a very full year in 2011 going to 11 shows.2011 started at the Mayhem weekend in May,and ended the year at Warwick.
A Team have already started 2012 at Alexandra Palace at the end January, ellesmere port in march and are looking forward to a very full year in 2012.

This website will allow you to keep track of the progress of the model with regular updates, picture galleries, some information about the full size ship and a list of the models projected appearances. We have already started the newest project, pictures and information will be posted soon.
Originally A Team Boatyard was founded as a small team of boat exhibitors. Over the last year we have decided that the purpose of A Team Boatyard is for any like minded enthusiasts from anywhere in the country can come and join us, at any shows where we are appearing. This gives the one man band exhibitor a chance to join in with a group of like minded people and enjoy shows they would not normally attend. So if you are interested in joining A Team at any events just e.mail us via the website.

In the meantime feel free to have a wander around our site. If you feel the need to leave a comment please do so on our message wall, but please be kind, we are delicate flowers.

Daring details

The Type 42's main armament is the powerful Seadart area defence missile system, which has served the Royal Navy well on operations from the Falklands conflict to the Gulf War, but which now needs replacement. But a new type of system is now needed, and PAAMS is a fresh design with the prime role of defending ships against salvo attacks by potent anti-ship missiles that are expected to come into service in the coming decades. The Sampson radar, the associated command and control system, long-range radar, vertical launch system and the very fast and agile Aster missiles combine to create a system several orders of magnitude more powerful and effective than Seadart.

The Type 45 will also have a comprehensive suite of other weapons and equipment that will ensure that it can be deployed on a wide range of military tasks. Equipment selected already for the class will includes a main gun for shore bombardment - currently the 4.5" Mark 8 Mod 1 weapon - and either the Merlin HM Mark1 anti-submarine helicopter or the Lynx HMA Mark 8 helicopter. These aircraft will carry Stingray anti-submarine torpedoes. The ship will also be equipped with the Surface Ship Torpedo Defence System, which is being procured by the Defence Procurement Agency Torpedo Countermeasures project team. This equipment will protect the Type 45 against the threat of the most advanced current and future torpedoes. The ship will also be able to embark a force of up to 60 of Royal Marine Commandos or other troops and use its aircraft and boats to support them on operations. The Type 45 is large and spacious enough to accommodate lengthened vertical launchers that could carry cruise missiles, should the requirement for a land attack capability arise.

Sampson radar Sampson is a multi-function radar which is destined for the Type 45 destroyer. It brings together the roles of surveillance and tracking into one single system, with sophisticated anti-jamming arrangement. The two array faces of the radar sit back to back in an A-frame structure that rotates up to 30rpm. The Sampson is described as the world's most advanced radar, but BAES say that Sampson should not be viewed as the end of a journey, merely the beginning of the next stage - with potential for development and growth over future decades.

Boat museum Ellesmere Port

So ellesmere port has been and gone. Great weekend even better for me as i didn't have to drive and slept most of the way there. Arrived on the friday and put the boat together and dropped it in the water and thats where it stayed all weekend until we packed up on sunday. Ellesmere has what i regard as unique in that they set up a proper harbour inside one of the locks and have large models that they use as tug tows. All very organised and professional. We simply moored daring inside the harbour and when she wasn't sailing or being used as a tow she just stayed there and i have to admit it worked a treat. We met a lot of nice people that weekend. Had a very one sided tug of war with some tugs, all i can say on that is bring more tugs, lots of them. We met up with Dave Wooley at the show and let him have a little drive around which he seemed to enjoy. The only problem we had was that when we were setting up we noticed that one of the motors wasn't working but it really made very little difference to the enjoyment of the weekend. Pictures and video to follow keep tuned.

The scale

Comments have been made about the scale we have decided to build this model in. They usually include the words mad or nuts but there is method in our madness. 1/32 is a standard recognized scale amoung plastic modeller's and fairly common amoung marine modellers although the subject vessel tends to generally be a lot smaller. However for our purposes it is perfect because it allows us to build a model with lots of detail but that the detail is not so small that it is impossible to make or is easily broken.

We are sure that there are lots of people out there with model boats or ships built to 1/32 scale and we would like to hear from you. We have started a A T Boatyard Facebook page and would like you to join it and leave comments or tell us about your 1/32 scale boats.
